CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

THE ONLY LIGHT in the room when Raven woke up the next morning was the soft glow of a night light plugged into one of the wall sockets. When they got home after the cleansing, she’d put Indi to bed then climbed straight into the sleeping bag. She’d barely spoken to Riley all evening, or Riley had scarcely spoken to her, and she hadn’t been sure if she’d join her on the floor of Indi’s room or find another place to sleep. But, Riley’s body hugged hers, her head resting on Raven’s shoulder. So, she couldn’t be that mad at her, but Raven still felt like something was off between them.

She pressed her nose into Riley’s hair and breathed in, the scent of lavender and jasmine calming her. Maybe everything was fine now. Perhaps Riley had forgiven her after organizing the cleansing ritual. Had that been the cause of the angst between them? In the past, she probably would have let it go. Now, she knew they needed to talk and sort things out before it festered into something more.

She kissed Riley’s hair and closed her eyes again. She must have dozed back off because the next thing she knew, Riley’s cell phone alarm blared an annoying tune and Indi cried out.

“Shit.” She pulled herself out of the sleeping bag and went over to the crib.

“Sorry,” Riley moaned. “I have to get up and get ready for work.”

Jet was curled up next to Indi in the crib. Raven lifted Indi into her arms and turned to Riley, who sat up, still half asleep. “You’re going in to work?”

“Yeah.”

Raven took a deep breath as she bounced Indi in her arms. “Just because the festival is over doesn’t mean the threat is. Riley, you’ll be exposed at work.” Exposed and an easy target.

Riley stared up at her with heavy-lidded eyes. “I have to, Rave. I have to work.”

“I know, but…you’ll be careful? Use your protection spells? Be aware of who’s around you? Call me if you sense anything suspicious?”

Riley got out of the sleeping bag and went to Raven. “I’ll be careful.” She pressed a kiss to Raven’s mouth, quick and chaste.

“We should talk. After work.”

“I promised Jenny I’d help her and Rebecca look for a place after work.”

“Oh.” She knew she should be happy that Riley was getting to know her mother, but it hurt that she’d made plans without her. Stupid, she told herself. Just because they were back together didn’t mean Riley had to spend every waking moment with her. “After that, then?”

“Yeah, sure.” Riley gathered up some toiletries and a clean set of scrubs then headed off to the shower.

“Well, I guess that leaves you and me,” she said to Indi. “What will we get up to today?” She had a mid-morning appointment with her therapist and she needed to contact her insurance company about the car and the cottage. After that, she was going RV shopping. She’d call Mick and see if she was off today, both to get an update on the investigation and so she’d have company.
